The Story of Campbell Place

Jess tells the story of her family’s connection to Campbell Place:

"My great-grandparents lived in a house on Campbell Place in Colombo, Sri Lanka. As my mum says, the house had polished concrete floors, perfect for dancing, and an “open door” policy for nieces, nephews, neighbors, and all the passers-by. There was always something cooking for anyone who stopped by, and for those who couldn’t drop in because they were sick or working, meals were packed and sent out by bicycle with anyone heading to work.

The house was always alive with laughter and singing. When I think about the house I grew up in with my parents and grandparents in Sydney, Australia, which is also full of family, music, and food, I think about the legacy of Campbell Place. When I think about the spirit of “home” and feeling welcomed and valued in the spaces you occupy, I think about Campbell Place.”
